  • CCPH membership renewals are now due for memberships that expired in December! An official email has been sent to those of you with expired memberships. Members can renew their memberships by using the new PayPal option on the CCPH website. Credit cards and checks are all accepted forms of payment.   • CCPH invites any announcements or articles relating to history from our members and mailing list to include in our updates. CCPH is also accepting submissions for our California History Action web page. Any Public History articles, book reviews, events and/or projects are welcomed as submissions to help us promote history. Email any of your submissions to

New Historic Context from Caltrans

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is proud to announce the release of their long-awaited statewide context, A Historical Context and Methodology for Evaluating Trails, Roads, and Highways in California. The study takes a holistic approach offering a cohesive and comprehensive examination of these types of properties as well as a methodological approach for evaluating the properties for the National Register of Historic Places. A series of reference appendices are available in conjunction with the context. Visit the Caltrans website to see a list of other contexts published by the Department.

First SHRC Meeting of 2017 to be in Sacramento

The State Historical Resources Commission (SHRC) will hold their first meeting of the year on February 3, 2017, in the Robert T. Matsui Federal Courthouse, Sacramento. The Commission is scheduled to hear eleven nominations for the National Register of Historic Places. Information about the meeting and nominations can be found on the SHRC webpage.

Nomination Forms Now Available for 2017 Awards!

Application forms and criteria for the 2017 Governor's Historic Preservation Awards are now available through the OHP website. Do you know of a project, organization, or individual that exemplifies the best in historic preservation in California? Submit a nomination! The Governor's Historic Preservation Awards is an excellent opportunity to give much-deserved recognition to efforts that help preserve California's heritage. The deadline for submissions is May 15, 2017.

Registration Still Open for SCA 2017 Annual Meeting

The Society for California Archaeology (SCA) is still accepting registrations for their 2017 Annual Meeting, March 9-12, 2017. The meeting provides a chance to share and learn about the latest research and efforts in the field of archaeology. Visit the SCA website for full conference and registration details.

Nominations Accepted for VAF Awards

The Vernacular Architecture Forum is accepting nominations for the 2017 Paul E. Buchanan Award. The award recognizes contributions to the study and preservation of vernacular architecture and the cultural landscape. Visit the VAF website for details and nomination forms. The nomination deadline is February 17, 2017.

Executive Order 9066

Thursday, February 23, 2017, 6:00 PM California Historical Society, San Francisco Learn More Join us as we look back and celebrate CHS's landmark 1972 exhibition and book of historic photographs, Executive Order 9066. The first exhibition devoted to the exploration of the World War II incarceration of Japanese American citizens and people of Japanese descent, the exhibition premiered at San Francisco’s Legion of Honor and UC Berkeley’s University Art Museum before traveling nationally. Our program will include individuals and descendants of those who visited the exhibition along with the curator of the Dorothea Lange collection at the Oakland Museum of California (OMCA).
